AgeTech Labs is founded and run by Phil Vlach, Head of Technology at Schlegel Villages, one of Ontario's largest senior living operators with 19 communities across retirement and long-term care.
Schlegel Villages is closely tied to the Research Institute for Aging, founded by the Schlegel family with the University of Waterloo and Conestoga College — giving Phil a front-row seat to real-world aging innovation research.
He spent 25+ years building technology in industries that solved these problems earlier — wireless telecom, retail & e-commerce — and applies that playbook to senior living: systems that connect, data that travels, and technology a community can swap out without starting over.
He chairs the national technical committee developing CAN/DGSI 143 — Elder Living Open Architecture (ELOA), Canada's interoperability standard for senior living technology. He also founded AgeTech Toronto, bringing 50+ operators, vendors, researchers, and investors together every two months, and speaks at industry conferences — including ORCACON and TiLTC — on the 100-Year Life, building senior living technology like Lego, and responsible AI in care settings.
None of this is theory. It comes from daily operations, is shaped by real constraints, and is focused on what actually works.
